Contemplations from the crew: part two

Training for the Cannon-to-Cape started the 27th of April 2012. 11 weeks later the average cycler spent 1 770 kilometres on the bicycle, this adds up to about 62 hours on the road.

The first thought that comes to (my) mind is; "really nothing else to do?".   During a social event, every or any conversation is hijacked by one of the cyclist... talking about slips, “rolling”, “Piet Rooi (hill)”, “Bona se bult (hill)“, freezing toes and fingers, temperature during the previous ride, whistle blowing (in the real sense of the word, blowing a whistle, who would have thought?) and I can go on for hours (as they can), sometimes we (the less crazy ones, in our minds), get bored, irritated or just outright confused!

Having said that, who can blame them? I can just imagine the sense of team spirit they have developed over the past few weeks, the relationships that strengthen during the uphill (again in every sense of the word) battle, where one spouse literally carry the other one up the hill, or where one of the stronger members of the group fall back to motivate one that is struggling at the back, or just being on the road together doing something they enjoy for a cause they believe in.

This weekend the group will cycle from Roepersfontein to Raap & Skraap (both Karsten Farms), totalling 200 kilometres. Watch this space to see how this challenge was conquered.

If you still don't believe in this groups commitment, please allow me to close with this story. When I phoned Pieter Karsten (Jnr) to confirm the distance they will be doing on Saturday, the answer I got was: he is unfortunately not available as he went hunting...you guessed it...on his bicycle.  And with that, I rest my case.

Regards,

Elizca Kies
