There is something so magical about 14 cyclists, family and
friends, on the road practising with one goal in mind: riding on bicycles from
Kanoneiland to Lourensford in only 5 days, in order to collect money for a
worthy organisation: CANSA.
Driving behind them (calling myself the protector of all) on
Wednesday, seeing them helping and supporting each other up the hills, made
even me (who believe exercise should only be done in self-defence) want to jump
on a bicycle and join them in their quest.
Having said that, there is no way I will ever be able to do what they
are doing – the commitment, effort & self-discipline is overwhelming.
On Saturday, 16th of June, the challenge was
riding from Kanoneiland to Lake Grappa near Augrabies, via Blouputs (a
farming district in the Northern-Cape), totalling 150km/96 miles. This route
was completed in about 7 hours. In all honesty, when they arrived at Lake
Grappa, they didn’t even seem that tired, there was still time (and energy)
left for a handshake, a smile and a conversation about yet another challenge
this group of cyclist conquered.
I look forward to see them go from strength to strength in
the next few weeks – and we will be there to support them all the way – all of
us at home believe in you and your cause!
